Languages
At Tendring Primary School, we want children to enjoy learning French and feel confident having a go at speaking a new language. We help pupils build their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, using the National Curriculum as our guide. Through Kapow, lessons are planned in clear steps so children can gradually build up their vocabulary, phonics and grammar over time. We encourage them to practise their pronunciation and intonation, and to use simple words and sentences to share ideas. As they move through the school, children revisit what they’ve learned so it sticks, helping them grow in confidence and independence.
We also want children to be curious about the wider world and develop an interest in different cultures. Lessons include lots of opportunities to ask and answer questions, speak in full sentences and spot patterns in language, helping children understand how French works. We aim to create a relaxed and supportive environment where it’s okay to make mistakes and keep trying. By the end of Key Stage 2, we hope pupils feel positive about languages, have a good basic understanding of French and are ready to carry on learning with confidence at secondary school.
